My name is Melissa E. Herrera-Rosales. I have four sisters. I am originally from El Paso, Texas. My first language was Spanish. I was born on Labor Day and my mom was given a certificate with a gold seal and a picture of a beautiful longhorn declaring me the “Daughter of Texas.” I was voted JROTC Military Ball Queen my senior year of high school. I majored in Interdisciplinary Studies with a minor in Education, Specialization in Mathematics and Concentration in Science. I married my high school sweetheart and when he got commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force our journey took us to many places around the world. We have been blessed with three daughters. Being a military family was extremely challenging but it also came with a lot of wonderful experiences and blessings. During my time as a homemaker, I volunteered a lot in my daughters’ schools. One classroom dedicated a book in my name for helping them set up a reading program with parent volunteers in their classroom. The book is in their school library for students to read. I was also awarded the Volunteer Service Award for building a safer, healthier and more vibrant community. My husband retired from the Air Force after 22 years of service. We decided to retire here in Colorado Springs. Having stability here in Colorado Springs gave me the opportunity to pursue the career of my dreams. I have always wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember.
