Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education
Wilson is currently servicing over 125 students in their Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education (CLDE) Program! We have four CLDE Teachers who service all levels of multilingual learners. We service students who are new to the country as well as students who need linguistic support to access their classroom instruction. We focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Last year, our CLDE students showed remarkable growth in their language skills according to CMAS. Wilson celebrates diversity in a warm and welcoming environment!
Gifted and Talented
We're glad you're interested in Wilson's Gifted and Talented and Academic Enrichment program! We are constantly growing and improving our gifted education program for our high-ability students who need an additional challenge outside of their general education classroom. Within this program, students are able to go deeper or accelerate in reading and/or math through rich discussions, project-based learning units, and critical thinking challenges. Students identified with specific gifted needs often experience their own social-emotional challenges, so we regularly engage in conversations and activities to support students through both academic and social-emotional experiences.
Grades 3-5 reading groups occur three times per week; Grades 3-5 math groups occur twice a week; and we are excited to include K-2 reading and math groups, which occur once a week. Every student’s testing data in every grade level is looked at in depth by the Gifted Resource teacher and the classroom teacher to determine a student’s eligibility and needs. Students who score at the 85th percentile or above in a subject are eligible to join this group. Students who score in the 95th percentile or above in a subject are eligible for official Gifted and Talented identification. Please reach out to your child's classroom teacher or our Gifted Resource teacher to express interest or ask questions about this program. We look forward to growing and learning with your child!
School Counselor and Social Worker
The School Counselor and School Social Worker provide support to students as needed. They provide small group instruction on Grief and Loss, School Success Skills, Anxiety, Social skills, Conflict Resolution and Emotional Regulation. In addition, classroom instruction is provided using the Random Acts of Kindness curriculum and SEL curriculum on a regular basis. Mr. Webb has almost 20 years as a school counselor. Ms. Moore has almost 20 years experience as a social worker.
Special Education
The Wilson Special Education Department is a vital resource for our students. Our team has over 40 years of combined experience in education. They are advocates for inclusion, with all students engaging with their peers daily and getting access to grade level in addition to the extra support they receive. Our students are held to high standards in and out of the classroom, and they continue to meet those expectations. Students are encouraged to go past what they can't do and think of what they do. They set their own goals and track their progress. Even the most reluctant students gain confidence and reach levels they never thought they could. Approaching learning in different ways, we are able to provide each student with child centered strategies for success. The team ensures a classroom environment that provides a whole child support system that our students need, addressing concerns immediately and continually celebrating successes. In addition to two Special Education Teachers, there are three, Special Education Educational Assistants.
